Up-Tempo Offense
One of the New York Knicks’ most frustrating flaws in 2015-16 was the pure refusal to push the pace. The Knicks ranked No. 24 in the NBA in pace, which is a measure of the number of possessions a team runs per game.
Under head coach Jeff Hornacek, New York is all but certain to push the pace—and that’s wonderful news for Derrick Williams.
Without a measure of hyperbole, Williams is one of the most explosive athletes in the NBA. Not only is he 6’9″ with a near 7’2″ wingspan, but he can jump out of the gym and runs the floor as well as most guards.
In an up-tempo offense, there’s no reason to believe Williams won’t thrive.
When the Knicks gave Williams the freedom to get out in transition, he played at an exceptionally high level. He scored 31 points in a game, had two other 20-point performances, and scored at least 15 points in 16 different outings.
In an offense that actually caters to his strengths, Williams could thrive with consistently.
