Pro: Filling A Void

The New York Knicks need to make a significant upgrade to both backcourt positions. Whether that improvement is made organically or via free agency or a trade, it needs to be done sooner than later.

Thus, if it doesn’t cost too much to do it, the Knicks would be wise to give trading for Rose a serious look.

If trading for Rose works out, then New York will return to the playoffs with a trio to be reckoned with. Rose can be Jeff Hornacek’s dynamic playmaker, Carmelo Anthony would be the go-to scorer, and Kristaps Porzingis the star big man.

If trading for Rose doesn’t work out, then his contract would expire at the end of the year and New York would free up more than $20 million in cap space.

The reality of this situation is that landing a high-caliber player on an expiring contract may be the ideal outcome. The Top 2 free agent point guards both have issues of their own, with Mike Conley battling tendinitis in his achilles tendon, and Rajon Rondo becoming something of a journeyman.

With no one option standing out from the rest, perhaps dealing for a one-year rental with upside would be the rational move.

Perhaps staying away from big names with a history of injuries would be ideal, as well.
