Pro: Expiring Contract

As previously alluded to, there would be a significant measure of risk involved in trading for Derrick Rose. His injury history suggests another issue could soon be on the horizon, and that’s far more concerning than talent or fit ever could be.

With that being said, there’s something of a failsafe that’d make investing in Rose slightly easier to stomach: his expiring contract.

Rose is due a hefty $21,323,252 in 2016-17. The good news for either the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, or any other team that trades to acquire him is that 2016-17 is the final season on his current contract.

Thus, if the Rose experiment were to fail, he’d be a free agent after just one season in New York.

That provides an interesting measure of intrigue to balance out the concern. This isn’t to say that Rose’s expiring contract makes the cost of doing business well worth it, but it does create a reason for intrigue.

Betting the house on a one-year rental wouldn’t be wise, but if Rose can be had for a reasonable cost, it would be easier to justify knowing he could be dropped after a potentially poor year.
