Con: Max Contract?

The No. 1 question surrounding DeMar DeRozan is one that has no definitive answer: how much money is he really worth? DeRozan is an elite athlete and slasher, but he’s also a midrange jump shooter who has yet to embrace the recent emphasis on 3-point shooting.

Due to his rise to All-Star status, it stands to reason that DeRozan could command a max contract—or something close to it.

Chances are, the Knicks’ lowest possible offer would be a four-year contract worth $80 million. The more likely outcome is a contract worth more than $90 million, however, with the probability of it exceeding $100 million range.

Per Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv, head coach Jeff Hornacek stated that the Knicks are willing to hand out a max contract.

DeRozan may or may not be deserving of a max contract, but he’s certainly in line to receive one. He’s one of the best shooting guards in the NBA, ranked in the Top 10 in scoring in 2015-16, and is the most productive slasher in the Association.

Appealing as that may be, it’s never easy to hand out a max contract to a player who isn’t—yet?—a superstar.
