Knicks Rumors: Pros And Cons Of Pursuing Rajon Rondo
Con: Off-Ball Offense
In the Triangle Offense, the system Jeff Hornacek ran with the Phoenix Suns, and the modern NBA in general, point guards must be able to play off-ball. They aren’t becoming off-ball players, per se, but that’s a skill that’s increasing in its importance.
Rajon Rondo shot much better in 2015-16 than he ever has before, but there’s no telling if that will last.
Rondo made a career-high 62 3-point field goals on a career-best 36.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc in 2015-16. It was the first time in his career that he’d made at least 50 3-point field goals, and just his third time over 30 percent.
Per Marc Berman of The New York Post, there’s a concern within the New York Knicks that Rondo holds onto the ball for too long offensively.
"Resurgent Rajon Rondo, Carmelo Anthony’s choice, is next, but some in the organization believe he hangs onto the ball too much."
Rondo certainly knows how to create scoring opportunities, but he has been criticized for disrupting the offensive rhythm in the past.
Rondo is at his best with the ball in his hands, but the concern that he over-dribbles isn’t new. Something similar was said about him when he was a member of the Boston Celtics, and it was a quiet narrative in 2015-16 with the Sacramento Kings.
Simply put, a ball-dominant facilitator can thrive, but they must be able to hold the opposition accountable as a scorer.
