Con: Injury History

The most concerning aspect of Mike Conley’s career profile is his history of injuries. Conley has been generally healthy throughout his career, but the past two seasons have been tough on him.

As the New York Knicks ponder the possibility of handing Conley the four-year deal that he’ll likely receive, his health is a clear concern.

Conley’s injuries in 2014-15 were more a product of bad luck than bad health. In 2015-16, however, he missed 26 games, as well as the entire postseason, with an injury that’s worth acknowledging and fearing.

Conley missed the final 20 games of the 2015-16 regular season with tendinitis in his achilles.

Regardless of a player’s position, an achilles tendon injury is the ultimate red flag. That injury is treatable if not severe, but could lead to a tear or require surgery if it is—and the fact that Conley missed 20-plus games suggests it could be.

New York will obviously do its homework on Conley’s health and future, but this is a red flag that must be addressed.
