The Washington Wizards are approaching a proverbial crossroads with shooting guard Bradley Beal. The 22-year-old is in line for a massive payday this coming summer, and the Wizards may be reluctant—or unable—to pay him if free agency goes according to plan.

It’s hard to imagine Washington letting Beal walk, but with signing Kevin Durant conceivably at the top of the agenda, it’d be worth testing how much the Wizards are willing to pay.

Beal is one of the better young scorers in the NBA, with a lethal 3-point jump shot and the ability to create in space. Oddly enough, the latter ability only seems to shine through during the postseason, when the 22-year-old takes his game to an entirely different level.

In two postseason appearances, Beal is averaging 21.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 2.1 3-point field goals made in 21 games played.

Beal, who will turn 23 in June, would provide immediate support to Carmelo Anthony as a reliable No. 2 scoring option. The hurdle, of course, is that Beal has missed at least 19 games in three of his four NBA seasons—a sign that he’s either injury-prone or still growing into his body.

This would be a gamble due to Beal’s history of injuries, but signing a shooting guard of a similar age to Kristaps Porzingis would be a wise endeavor.
