If He Runs The Triangle…

There’s no guaranteeing that Frank Vogel’s presence will lead to free agents flocking to play for the New York Knicks. The possibility is, however, stronger with Vogel at the helm than with the Knicks’ current alternatives.

New York would have a much easier time selling the Triangle Offense to free agents if it had a young coach with the respect of the playing masses.

Intriguing as that may be, this hiring isn’t going to happen if Vogel doesn’t express a genuine willingness to run the Triangle Offense. That’d likely require his naming Kurt Rambis as one of his coordinators, but it isn’t a bad proposition to add a two-time NBA champion assistant to one’s coaching staff.

If he’s willing to have a staff that includes Rambis and Brian Shaw—a Phil Jackson disciple who was an assistant to Vogel in Indiana—the 42-year-old would check all the boxes on what New York needs in order to run the Triangle Offense.

More importantly, if Vogel were to have an assistant coach to help teach and run the Triangle Offense, he could focus his attention on defense. That’s already what he prefers to do, which makes this pairing one that could be immediately rewarding for the Knicks.

This may be coming out of left field, but the best possible move for Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks is to hire Frank Vogel.
