Roster Construction

During Frank Vogel’s tenure, the Indiana Pacers have been a defensive-minded team that let offensive opportunities come to them. Vogel must do a better job of creating offense in the halfcourt, which is where the Triangle Offense potentially comes into play.

When all else fails, however, Vogel has proven capable of making deep postseason runs on the strength of an All-Star small forward and a power forward with a lethal jump shot.

Sound familiar?

The New York Knicks are building around Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis in a similar way to how the Pacers did Paul George and David West. George is an all-around offensive threat as a scorer, while West has one of the best midrange games in the NBA.

In New York, Anthony is an all-around offensive threat as a scorer, and Porzingis has one of the most intriguing jumpers of any power forward in the NBA.

In terms of roster construction, the current state of the Knicks isn’t too different from what the Pacers had. New York may actually be better for Vogel to work with due to the presence of two rim protectors, but the key to all of this is Anthony.

Anthony wants a coach who can help him win, and as evidenced by what Vogel did with George, he’s the perfect man to help ‘Melo do so.
