If the New York Knicks are looking for a sixth man, free agency may be the route to take. If Phil Jackson follows such a path, who might he target?

Nothing controls the success and failure of an NBA team quite like structure. Even the most talented of starting lineups have crumbled without the ideal balance provided by a competent second unit, which brings the New York Knicks to one of its most pressing questions of the summer.

Who is going to anchor the second unit?

The Knicks’ second unit starred during the opening month of the season, but quickly hit a sharp decline. The absence of a go-to scorer crippled the reserves, as the by-committee approach quickly lost its luster without a defined leader of the bench mob.

Thus, the search for the ideal sixth man has commenced.

A sixth man can often spell the difference between victory and defeat for an NBA team. As Knicks fans likely remember, J.R. Smith proved as much in 2012-13 when his winning Sixth Man of the Year coincided with New York winning 54 games.

The question is, which free agency options would be best to solidify the Knicks’ second unit?
