Technically speaking, Tony Wroten wouldn’t be re-signed for the 2016-17. Instead, he’d have his partially-guaranteed contract paid in full.
In other words, he can either be brought on as an upside project or let go with minimal compensation. Wroten has upside worth exploring, and Phil Jackson would benefit from doing so.
For those unfamiliar, Wroten is a 6’6″ combo guard with a well-built 203-pound frame and a 6’9″ wingspan. He’s coming off of a knee surgery that cut his 2014-15 campaign short and greatly limited him in 2015-16, but before that, was quick off the bounce and explosive at the rim.
With respectable court vision and the ability to make plays in the passing lanes, Wroten is built for the role of a sixth man in the NBA.
The Knicks have issues at point guard, with Jose Calderon’s age and Jerian Grant‘s inexperience hurting New York in the short-term. Shooting guard isn’t much better, with Arron Afflalo expected to opt out and Langston Galloway receiving inconsistent minutes.
Wroten may not pan out, but if New York doesn’t explore his potential on a cost-friendly deal, it’d be doing itself a severe injustice.
