The New York Knicks need to swing for the fences. A 25-37 record may not be ideal, but the Knicks are a reasonably attainable 7.0 games back of the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference—something that suggests New York’s foot needs to be on the proverbial gas pedal.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, interim head coach Kurt Rambis acknowledged that New York is considering Ty Lawson as an option in free agency.
"Rambis on Tuesday confirmed that Ty Lawson, recently bought out by the Houston Rockets, has been on option discussed by Knicks management. “There’s a lot of names that have been bantered about,” Rambis said. “… We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but those are all names that have all come up.”"
Unfortunately, Lawson opted against signing with the Knicks and instead joined forces with Paul George and the Indiana Pacers, per Shams Charania of The Vertical.
"Free-agent guard Ty Lawson has agreed to a deal with the Indiana Pacers, league sources told The Vertical. Lawson, 28, is expected to report to Indiana on Sunday."
Nevertheless, the Knicks should keep their eye on Lawson as a potential target in free agency.
Lawson’s 2015-16 campaign with the Houston Rockets was tumultuous. He shot inefficiently, failed to create in the half court, and struggled to provide Houston with the impact it expected from a player who was expected to thrive as either a starter or the sixth man.
Prior to his tenure with the Rockets, Lawson was one of the most dynamic point guards in the NBA.
From 2011-12 to 2014-15, Lawson put together averages of 16.4 points and 8.0 assists as a member of the Denver Nuggets. He did so on an efficient slash line of .453/.358/.773, thus establishing himself as one of the best players to not make an All-Star Game.

If Lawson can turn things around in Indiana, it’d behoove the Knicks to at least consider him for a sixth man role.
