The New York Knicks have a long history of finding unheralded players and turning them into high-caliber contributors. Examples of such improbable success are Langston Galloway, Jeremy Lin, and John Starks, and that list could one day include the following player if he’s developed properly.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, one of the players whom interim head coach Kurt Rambis was referring to as an option for the final roster spot is Ray McCallum.
"Other options for New York include free agent Tony Wroten and Ray McCallum, who was released by San Antonio late last week. It is unclear at this point if McCallum has cleared waivers. The question is, can McCallum help the Knicks in either the short or the long-term?
McCallum is a skilled pick-and-roll playmaker with a respectable jump shot and solid court vision. His playing style—no, not his ability—is similar to that of Spurs star Tony Parker, which could fit well in the modern interpretation of the Triangle Offense.
If nothing else, McCallum will play with a team-first mentality and remain professional in times of adversity.
It’s hard to imagine any player would save the season with just 20 games remaining. What McCallum would provide is a deeper measure of depth at the point guard position, including a moldable mind that can develop into a high-quality player in the long-term at just 24 years of age.
McCallum isn’t the best option, but he’s one that could certainly help the Knicks in the future.
