The New York Knicks invested the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 NBA D-League Draft in college basketball legend Jimmer Fredette. Allan Houston‘s Westchester Knicks temporarily lost Fredette to the New Orleans Pelicans, but now that he’s playing in White Plains, he’s thriving.

According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, Fredette has team president Phil Jackson on his side.

"The Knicks also have been monitoring the D-League for potential additions. They have an open roster spot so they can add a player without making a corresponding roster move. In light of Cleanthony Early’s knee injury from Wednesday’s shooting, the Knicks may need to add someone ASAP. Jimmer Fredette of the Westchester Knicks is one candidate. Fredette has played well for the Knicks’ D-League club (23 points, 4.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds) and Phil Jackson is a fan of Fredette’s, according to a source, but that doesn’t guarantee him a roster spot with the Knicks."

Fredette wouldn’t address New York’s most significant weaknesses, but he’d still be of intriguing value.

Fredette was once mentioned in the same breath as Stephen Curry, who won MVP in 2014-15 and is the frontrunner again in 2015-16. That time has passed, as Fredette’s ball-handling and court vision pale in comparison to Curry’s, but the fact that he can shoot bodes well for his future.

The good news for Fredette is that, even if he is utilized as a 3-point specialist, he’s a good enough shooter to contribute. The bad news is that New York needs a point guard who can create efficient scoring opportunities and play at a high level defensively.

There are pros and cons, but after seeing how heavily Steve Novak influenced the Knicks’ momentum in 2012-13, it may not be a bad idea to add a marksman to the roster.
