5. Dave DeBusschere

Despite the fact that he’s one of the greatest players in franchise history, contemporary New York Knicks fans have a tendency to overlook Dave DeBusschere. The rest of the basketball community does, as well.

Underrated or otherwise, DeBusschere is a New York legend.

After beginning his career with the Detroit Pistons, DeBusschere made an immediate impact with the Knicks. New York won a championship in his first full season with the team, and that’s no coincidence.

DeBusschere and Willis Reed formed what might have been the most feared interior tandem in the NBA.

An eight-time All-Star with six All-Defensive Team nods and one All-NBA appearance, DeBusschere was a nightly double-double. He’d shut his matchup down, score when necessary and do all of the dirty work.

DeBusschere is a deserving member the Basketball Hall of Fame whose No. 22 jersey was retired by the Knicks in 1981.

He was a true defensive anchor for two championship teams.
