2: Porzingis Is As Advertised

Kristaps Porzingis, the fourth overall pick in the draft, was always going to be a work-in-progress.  The word on the previously unheard of big man was he could shoot like almost no one at his 7’3” stature – drawing myriad comparisons to Dirk – but that he was very young (at 19) and physically underdeveloped strength-wise (at only 233 lbs).

So far, the defense has been a concern.  Despite managing three unexpected blocks on Jhalil Okafor Tuesday night, Porzingis was consistently overmatched in this matchup.  Granted, the Latvian will be predominantly featured in his more natural 4-spot once the regular season starts instead of the 5, where he’s been for most of the Summer League.  But he’ll still likely be overpowered most nights until he puts on more weight.

His shooting, on the other hand, is varied and very impressive so far.  He’s banked shots in like Tim Duncan and come off curls like a shooting guard.  His form is smooth, and whether it’s his mechanics or his hype (or both), every shoot seems headed for the bottom of the net.  He hasn’t put up as many 3-pointers as anticipated, but look for that to change as the Summer League continues.
