New York Knicks: Fire Mike Woodson? Ha! Good Joke

While preseason was going on in the NBA, the New York Knicks did not show what seemed to be the capabilities of their deep roster. With that I decided to vent my anger through a post called “Put Up or Shut Up, Knicks!” and to the despair of the garden faithful, including myself, the Knicks are in trouble and that is evident.

The problems seem to stretch from egocentricity, all the way to internal issues revolving around ever present (not always the best thing), James Dolan.

While New York remains the biggest market for American sports, and potentially the biggest market in the world for sports, the fans are also some of the most demanding in sports. With the Yankees having won 27 World Series; the Mets two World Series wins; the Giants four Super Bowl wins; the Jets lone Super Bowl victory; the Rangers four Stanley Cups; the Islanders four Stanley Cups, and finally the Nets two ABA championships, New York has the right to demand success.

But to head coach Mike Woodson, who reinstated the philosophy of hard-nosed perimeter defense after concept seemed lost under the reign of Mike D’Antoni, seems wrong.

After last week’s 20-point loss to the Atlanta Hawks, the Garden erupted and not in the way New York wanted.

Chants were erupting from all sections with almost all having something to say along the lines of “Fire Woodson!”

To those fans I say shut up. As we all know sports fans have conditional support towards a coach and that keeps them on the hot seat throughout their careers, something that strives them to do the best of their ability. Some live up to expectations better than others and that is something that everyone needs to realize.

Do not get me wrong, Woodson needs to pick things up for him to remain as the head coach of the Knicks, but calling for his head in November seems not only uncalled for, but also a sign that New York is hindering the development of one of its great teams, and instead pushing the team back to the early 2000’s, a generation no New Yorker wants to remember.

With a head coaching record of 75-41 during his tenure in New York, he has proven he knows what he’s doing and should be allowed complete control of the team over people such as Dolan, and Steve Mills.

Iman Shumpert seems to be the crown jewel of the future of the Knicks organization as of right now, and whether that be for the better or worst we are yet to see but one thing is for sure- he is a lot better than Kenneth Faried.

One of the rare things there is not there to like about some Knicks fans is that no matter what the circumstances are, the roster will always be good enough to win an NBA championship.

To the countless number of people who have told me that is the case, please tell me how having one consistent center on the 15-man roster reflects the depth of arguably the most important position in the NBA (leave a comment below if you can justify it) and when players such as Roy Hibbert have Luis Scola backing them up, then what constitutes having Cole Aldrich backing you up as depth?

The Knicks are a competitor no doubt and even with this slow start, they should still consider themselves one. But as superstar, Carmelo Anthony said “We ain’t playing worth a sh*t right now… I don’t even know how to explain It.”

Well Carmelo, neither can New York.
