The New York Knicks need a point guard who can back up starter Derrick Rose. Who should Phil Jackson and Steve Mills be targeting?

The New York Knicks have addressed the need for a starting point guard by trading for Derrick Rose. In doing so, however, New York lost the entirety of its depth at the position by dealing Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant, and waiving Tony Wroten.

Thus, one of the Knicks’ top priorities in free agency must be to sign the ideal backup point guard.

Rose is a dynamic talent with the 2011 NBA MVP award and three All-Star Game appearances on his resume. Rose has also endured his fair share of encounters with injuries, which calls on New York to have a contingency plan.

Rose has improved his durability in each of the past two seasons, but the player signed to become New York’s backup point guard must be prepared to fill in as an occasional starter.

That’s an attractive selling point for the Knicks, as it provides reserve-level free agents with an opportunity to shine in a major market. Not all teams can provide that opportunity, as a backup point guard is generally limited in their exposure.

The question is, which free agent point guards would best fit both Jeff Hornacek‘s offense and the role of a backup to Rose?
