There’s one thing New York Knicks fans want to see the front office do before the 2023-24 season starts, and it doesn’t involve trading for a star player.

Immanuel Quickley is eligible to sign an extension after the best season of his young career. He averaged a career-high 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 44.8% from the floor and 37% from three.

The guard’s efforts were recognized as he was a finalist to win the Sixth Man of the Year award, but Malcolm Brogdon edged him out.

The Knicks listened to offers for Quickley at the start of last season, but by the time the trade deadline rolled around, he was off the table. He could be included in a trade package if New York goes all-in for a star, but it’s still too soon to know which player will be available and when.

As soon as Josh Hart was eligible to sign an extension in early August, he did so. Next up is Quickley; if he doesn’t sign an extension this summer, he’ll become a restricted free agent next offseason.

When is the New York Knicks’ deadline to sign Immanuel Quickley to extension?

The Knicks will have until Oct. 24, one day before the team’s season opener against the Celtics, to sign Immanuel Quickley to an extension.

On Sept. 1, SNY’s Ian Begley discussed Quickley signing an extension and wrote:

"Traditionally, negotiations with players in Quickley’s situation (mid to late first-round picks who have played well enough to earn a significant extension) start to pick up in earnest prior to training camp."

Begley added that halfway through last season, “some members of the organization felt strongly that the Knicks would end up extending Quickley.”

Heavy’s Sean Deveney reported in July that IQ wants to sign a nine-figure extension. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, New York could be willing to pay Quickley up to $20 million a year.

Quickley’s camp has good reason to demand a hefty extension, as he demonstrated this past season how important he is to the Knicks’ young core. Training camp will open for NBA teams in a few weeks, and that’s when new information regarding IQ’s extension will likely be reported.

Will New York give Immanuel Quickley the number he wants, or will the guard play the 2023-24 season with a chip on his shoulder?
