When Shams Charania reported that Serge Ibaka and the Bucks were working on a trade, the Knicks were labeled as a potential landing spot for the 33-year-old veteran. Mitchell Robinson has been sidelined since he fractured his thumb against the Wizards on Jan. 18. He underwent surgery on Jan. 19 and there hasn’t been an update on when he will return, although James Dolan did say a couple of weeks ago that he would be out for another four weeks.

Robinson is expected to return sometime after the All-Star break, but the Knicks could pursue Ibaka on the buyout market for injury insurance. He has championship experience and could step in when needed.

Ibaka appeared in only 16 games for Milwaukee this season, averaging 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.6 minutes. He isn’t the player that he once was, but he’s an option that New York should explore nonetheless. Hopefully Robinson won’t have to deal with another injury after returning, but that’s something that the Knicks should still be prepared for.
