NY Knicks: Dallas is the dark horse in the race

The Mavericks don’t fit the description of the teams that Oladipo wants to play for, but if you know anything about Mark Cuban, you know he is not afraid to take risks. The upside from adding Oladipo might be worth the risk. Below is the best offer I believe Dallas will make for Oladipo, coincidently, I found someone online that agrees with me.

The Mavericks would offer Tim Hardaway Jr. who is on an expiring contract, rookie guard Tyrell Terry, and a 2021 2nd round pick. While Hardaway is the better player, the true asset in the deal is Terry. As most Knick fans remember, Hardaway wasn’t as good for the orange and blue as he’s been for Dallas. The reason is simple, in Dallas he plays with Luka Doncic. Even with improved offensive numbers, Hardaway knew better than to opt-out of the last year of his contract which pays him $19M. It’s for the same reason he was included in the Kristaps Porzingis (KP) trade as a salary dump, at best he is a fringe starter on a good team. The Rockets would only take Hardaway back because he’s on an expiring contract.

As for draft capital, Dallas doesn’t have much left since the Knicks own two of their next three 1st round picks. It will look really bad if this year’s 1st round draft pick turns into a lottery ticket for the Knicks. So the best they can offer is a 2nd round pick this year. They don’t control their 1st or 2nd round pick in the covet 2023 (double) draft, so they can’t be offered at this time.

As for the young prospect, Tyrell Terry was projected to be a 1st round pick that went 31st overall, in the 2020 draft. The Stanford product needs to grow into his body in order to be an effective NBA player, he only weighs 160Ibs on a 6’2″ frame. But his college stats are impressive as he averaged 14.7 ppg on 40.8% three-point percentage and 89.1% from the free-throw line.

But what is encouraging has been his performance in the G-League where the Smoking Cuban reported that he has proven he can run the point and play off the ball as a spot-up shooter. They have compared him to former Maverick Seth Curry. While I don’t think the trade will happen, as I don’t see Houston wanting to help their in-state rival, it does serve as a baseline for what other teams will have to offer.
