The Atlanta Hawks selected a potential franchise cornerstone at No. 4 overall in forward Michael Porter Jr. It was a decision that could limit the time that either John Collins or Taurean Prince will spend in Atlanta, but it would give the organization a real shot at developing a superstar.
With the forward positions addressed and Dennis Schröder at point guard, the Hawks turn their attention to the 2-spot, where Chandler Hutchison would be the perfect fit.
Porter is a dynamic scorer and Schröder can penetrate against any caliber of defender, but there’s a need for spacing along the wings. Atlanta will also need a shot creator at a perimeter position if Porter proves to be more of a 4 than a 3.
Thankfully, Hutchison is one of the best scorers in this draft class—a truth that’s as much about his fundamental prowess as it is his creativity.
Hutchison is a 6’7″ wing with a 7’0″ wingspan, a tight handle, and a solid jump shot from both midrange and beyond the arc. He can finish at the rim with both hands and is more than capable of pulling out an acrobatic move to get two points in traffic.
Throw in Hutchison’s intriguing offensive potential and he becomes the best choice for the Hawks at No. 19 overall in the 2018 NBA Draft.
Knicks Notes: As the New York Knicks look for length along the perimeter, Hutchison is a dark horse prospect at No. 9.
