Honorable Mention: Major Market Appeal

There’s no way around the fact that playing in a major market increases the attention paid to high-quality players. If a player shines in a city such as Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York, the mainstream media will pick up on it quicker than if they’re in a smaller market.

Thus, one can’t help but acknowledge the fact that, if Kristaps Porzingis performs well in 2017-18, the hype train will be uncontrollable.

Jeremy Lin is a shining example of how success in New York City can translate to international fame. In an Eastern Conference that lost a 2017 All-Star starter in Jimmy Butler, the power of the major markets could shine through.

If Porzingis produces big numbers and helps the New York Knicks win at a reasonably consistent level, the fans could do the rest of the work.

This isn’t to say that Porzingis wouldn’t be deserving of an All-Star Game appearance if the fans fail to vote him in. Instead, it’s an acknowledgement of the fact that he’s unlikely to be overlooked—due in large part to the location of his franchise.

It’s limited to the honorable mention section, but major market appeal is a crucial talking point when evaluating whether or not Porzingis will be an All-Star.
