The New York Knicks almost traded Derrick Rose for Ricky Rubio, but talks fell through. Fortunately, there are point guards on the market.

Leading up to the 2017 NBA trade deadline, the New York Knicks were engaged in trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The rumored trade would have swapped scoring point guard Derrick Rose for master facilitator Ricky Rubio.

For better or worse, the trade talks broke down at the last minute and the Knicks failed to execute the trade that many were expecting to see completed.

For those who are of the belief that New York needs a new point guard, it’s worth noting that there are still an abundance of options to be found in free agency.

Both Rose and backup point guard Brandon Jennings will become free agents this coming summer. Given the possibility of both players signing elsewhere, the Knicks could be tasked with replacing one or each of their two point guards.

The merits of re-signing Rose and Jennings will be discussed, but it’s important to be aware of the alternative options.

In contrast to the thin class of free agent point guards in 2016, there are a number of intriguing options in 2017. From All-Stars to NBA champions, Phil Jackson will have an opportunity to recruit a number of game-changing players to New York.

The question is: which high-profile point guards are soon to be free agents and why should the New York Knicks consider signing them?
