The expansion of the New York Knicks’ roster is continuing into August. New York built its Summer League roster with intentions to find long-term contributors, and is doing the same with its training camp crew.

Shortly after formally announcing the signing of combo guard Ron Baker, Phil Jackson made another move official.

Before moving forward, it’s important to note that these deals are intended to send players to training camp. They aren’t guaranteed to make the main roster, and New York can sign up to 20 players before having to cut the group down by five to 15.

Having established that, it’s exciting to know that the Knicks have signed J.P. Tokoto to a partially guaranteed one-year deal.

New York will explore Tokoto’s upside during its training camp and the preseason.

Tokoto, 22, played three seasons under Roy Williams with the North Carolina Tar Heels. He made the 2014 ACC All-Defensive Team and spent the 2015-16 season with the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA D-League.

The hope in New York is that Tokoto can earn a main roster spot with his performance with the Knicks in training camp. The question is, can he actually do it?

Here are five reasons to believe that Tokoto should be kept around.
