The New York Knicks need to improve the point guard position. The list may change over the next few months, but these are the five players currently worth studying and considering.

The New York Knicks are engaged in the single most important coaching search in franchise history. Carmelo Anthony is one of the greatest pure talents to have ever worn a Knicks jersey, but with his 32nd birthday nearing, the window for contending is relatively small.

With all eyes shifted to the Knicks’ coaching search, it’s become easy to forget how badly the team suffered from an absence of ideal point guard play in 2016-17.

Rookie point guard Jerian Grant came along strong at the end of the season, but New York still needs to weigh its options in free agency. That doesn’t necessarily mean New York should overpay for a player, but it must at least weigh its best options.

There are no shortage of potential assets preparing to hit the open market.

Some players are statistically prolific, recording averages that even the most jaded of fans should be impressed by. Others bring different virtues to the table, including a penchant for postseason success, veteran leadership, pick-and-roll proficiency, and raw athleticism.

If New York is going to improve its point guard play through free agency, it simply cannot ignore the following five players as the best weapons to reload with.
