39…It has been 39 days since the Knicks tasted their last victory. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 was still top in the box office… that’s how long ago it has been. Boyhood has since been nominated and won Golden Globes Awards … What is this Boyhood movie they speak of and how did it win…

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day (speaking of movies, do yourself a favor and go check out Selma), New York caught a huge break. New Orleans played without their dynamic pick and roll duo in Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday. Davis was sidelined with a sprained toe on his left foot, and Jrue Holiday missed the game with a sore right ankle.

New York went on an early 9-0, capped off by a Carmelo Anthony three-pointer that gave the Knicks an 11-5 lead mid-way through the first quarter. Anthony scored half of his game high 24 points in the opening quarter. Eric Gordon matched Anthony’s 12 points but was essentially the only player that scored for New Orleans in the first quarter. Gordon’s teammates went 1/12 from the field for a grand total of three points. New York held a 22-16 lead after one quarter, holding New Orleans to 26.3% shooting from the field.

With Antony taking a rest, the Knicks offense strangely went through Jason Smith, Smith got his point-forward on, making plays happen. First Smith got Tim Hardaway Jr. free for a wide open three-pointer, then dished off a nice bounce pass to Shane Larkin for a layup, this gave the Knicks their first double digit lead of the game 35-25. Smith scored two points and handed out four assist in eight minutes of play in the second quarter.

The second quarter though was the Langston Galloway Show, Galloway scored 11 of his 21 points in the period, including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Galloway ended the first half with back to back threes that gave New York a 53-41 lead at intermission.

After a monster Galloway put back dunk mid-way through the fourth quarter, New York  only converted on one field goal in the next five minutes span.

In that time frame New Orleans went on a 9-2, with Tyreke Evans leading the way with six straight points, cutting the deficit to one point 93-92 with 1:56 remaining in the game. On the ensuing possession Anthony would get overaggressive and commit an offensive foul. New York caught a couple of breaks, with good looks from Gordon and Ryan Anderson missing.

Out of a timeout Galloway just dribbled around the perimeter with the ball, going nowhere…luckily the Pelicans bailed out the Knicks with a bad foul just before the shot clock expired. New Orleans had a foul to give and New York inbounded the ball, predictably Anthony ended up with the basketball and was immediately double teamed. Anthony found a wide open Jose Calderon, whom calmly knocked down the dagger three-pointer to give New York a four point lead with 32.7 seconds remaining in the game 96-92.

Smith blocked Gordon’s running jump shot and New York sealed the game at the line to win 99-92, snapping a 16 game losing streak. The Knicks walked off the court to a stand ovation from the Madison Square Garden crowd, finally getting a victory in the New Year. New York shared the basketball well Monday night with five players in double figures scoring. The Knicks passed the ball well as well, keeping errors to a minimum, collecting 22 assist to 4 turnovers
