New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony has been on the record of saying that his top priority is to win a championship.
For some it made his decision to re-sign with the Knicks a bit odd if he was indeed true about that statement.
But while ‘Melo feels that the Knicks are closer to title contention than many believe, he also is realistic and doesn’t believe the Knicks are close to contending this season.
Anthony is preaching patience and knows that there’s virtually no chance that the Knicks are capable of winning the title in the upcoming season.
“I do not expect to win a championship this year. That’s something that takes time and everything has to be in sync, from management to players. We have much work to do, but something that drives me. I know we can start creating the foundation of what we do. It’s the start of a good process, “said Anthony. “Next year we will have enough money to spend within the salary cap. But this year it is important to take the necessary steps towards those who will in the next year. I want to concentrate on building what we want from this year. “
That is actually good to hear from Anthony as he is showing that he understands that building this Knicks team into contenders is going to take some time.
Had he come out and said he thinks the Knicks can win right now he would have sounded pretty foolish.
As long as the Knicks take some steps forward this season and Anthony is on board buying into what Phil Jackson is trying to do, then it has the chance to be a successful season. More importantly though it is a good chance to lay down the building blocks for the future.
As long as ‘Melo is on board with that then all is good.
If anything at least Anthony has been saying all of the right things.
