NBA Rumors: Is Marc Gasol the Knicks top 2015 target?

Now that Kevin Love is on his way to Cleveland, it further complicates the New York Knicks plan for next offseason.

Even though they had very little chance at landing a superstar like Love, he has long been speculated as the Knicks top target next summer.

Now that Love is off the board and LaMarcus Aldridge all but assured of returning to Portland, the summer of 2015 doesn’t look as special for the Knicks as it once did.

When it is all said and done, it looks like Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol could wind up being the Knicks top target.

According to ESPN’s Ian Begley, that could indeed be the case.

Begley wrote:

So what does Jackson have to work with?

The Knicks could have $18 million to spend in free agency in the summer of 2015. That may be enough to land a max player, such as Marc Gasol.

But Jackson said last month that the Knicks may instead look to sign multiple players with their cap space.

Again, it’s imperative to spend wisely here. The Knicks need to build a roster around Anthony that can compete with Cleveland. There are a million ways to demonstrate just how difficult that will be now that Love is a Cav.

I really like Gasol as a player as he could give the Knicks a real threat at both ends of the floor from the center position.

Gasol averaged 14.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 47.3% from the field in 59 games last season.

It will be interesting after this season to see how aggressively Phil Jackson pursues a player like Gasol.

If he is indeed one of the Knicks top targets and Jackson strikes out, building this Knicks team into a championship contender could prove to be very difficult.

It already got a little bit harder now that Love has joined LeBron James in Cleveland.
