NBA Rumors: Knicks not finding takers for J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert

It’s no secret that the New York Knicks have a problem of having too many guards on the roster.

It’s also no secret that Knicks’ team president Phil Jackson has been looking to move J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert.

Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t seem to be having much luck.

It makes a ton of sense that Jackson looks to move Smith, whose $6.399 million cap hit for the 2015-16 season could present a problem for the Knicks trying to sign quality free agents next summer. The same goes for Shumpert, who will become a restricted free agent next summer and is unlikely to be thrown much money from the Knicks, so it makes sense to move both guys to help continue to build for the future.

Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders touched on why they haven’t been able to move either player.

Sure and lets move all the bums off of Broadway. It’s easy to say lets trade this guy and this guy, but you have to have a buyer and while the Knicks would love to move JR Smith’s money and Shump supposed attitude problem, not many teams are offering anything for them.

So do you down grade to get them off the roster? Not sure thats what Phil is looking for.

In a perfect world Jackson would be able to get a couple of draft picks for both guys and maybe a young player or two.

That isn’t going to happen and the Zen Master isn’t going to give either guy away for free.

I do believe that Jackson will continue to actively shop both guys, especially in Shumpert’s case as I don’t feel many teams will be lining up to take Smith’s baggage off the Knicks hands.

The bottom line is that Shump’s value dropped after another poor season and JR is JR , and because of that he has negative trade value. Jackson isn’t going to get anything of value for either guy right now.

Unfortunately I don’t see that happening before the season starts as the trade deadline seems more of a logical scenario for Jackson to start purging guys off the roster.
