NBA Rumors: New York Knicks could be done this offseason

The New York Knicks finally got their man over the weekend, inking superstar Carmelo Anthony to a nine-figure contract, but because of that, Knicks team president Phil Jackson may be all done for the summer.

The Knicks still have their taxpayers MLE (close to $3.2 million) to shell out, but there is a chance Jackson just heads into the season with what he has, as he is unlikely to spend much more money the rest of the offseason.

“I want to be fiscally responsible,” the Knicks president told Newsday’s Al Iannazzone after summer league practice Sunday. “We’ve been a taxpayer team for a little bit and we want to limit that. So we’re not just going to foolishly throw money away because it’s available to us to load up. We want to make an appropriate move that brings our team forward.”

The Knicks only have the $3.2 million MLE and minimum contracts to use at the moment. They did acquire a $3.6 million trade exception in the Tyson Chandler trade, but I wouldn’t expect them to use it.

Barring a trade to shed salary, I would expect Jackson to target a cheap big man or two and likely little else.

The Knicks do have 10 guards/wings on the roster right now so I would expect the Zen Master to look to move a couple, but he won’t do anything to add salary for next offseason.

So we are likely looking at a couple of cheap one year deals for possible big men and that is about it.

And that is fine.

The Knicks already accomplished what they wanted to this offseason.
