Carmelo Anthony to opt out of contract on Monday

As expected, New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony will make it official on Monday and opt out of his contract, which is very bad news or the New York Knicks and Knicks fans everywhere.

The 30-year old Anthony, who forced his way to New York nearly four years ago, is leaving $23.33 million on the table to become an unrestricted free agent.

Knicks team president Phil Jackson has been adamant about Anthony taking a pay cut which he is guaranteed to do as he won’t get a max contract from any team.

The Knicks, of course, can offer Anthony more money than anyone with a five-year, $125 million+ contract.  However, Anthony has said that the opportunity to win right away is his top priority so signing with a team like the Bulls or Rockets is far more likely than a return to New York, who have next to no chance to compete for a championship next season.

It has also been reported by many sources that the Knicks also know that opting out signals that Anthony is leaving as New York’s only real chance to keep Anthony was to get him to opt in and put off free agency for a year, something that Jackson tried to get Melo to do.

Anthony missed the playoffs for the first time in his NBA career last season and that didn’t sit very well with the 2013 NBA scoring champion.

The Chicago Bulls appear to be the front runners to sign Anthony, but the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and a handful of other teams are expected to be in the mix.

Signing with another team would mean a maximum contract of $90 million over five seasons for Anthony.  But that is not likely to happen either as it has been rumored that Anthony is open to sacrificing money to help his new team win right away. Throw in the fact that teams like the Bulls and Rockets will have to move some money in order to sign Anthony and he will likely have to do exactly that.

We have been talking about it forever, but the Carmelo Anthony Sweepstakes have officially begun.
