New York Knicks Rumors: Knicks have interest in Patty Mills

After an impressive postseason run that led to an NBA championship, San Antonio Spurs reserve point guard Patty Mills could be looking to cash in not only on a bigger contract, but an opportunity to play more.

That is where the New York Knicks could come into play.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, Mills would like to play in New York and see more minutes than he saw this past season.

That’s good news for an organization desperately looking to improve at the point guard position after watching Raymond Felton struggle miserably at both ends of the floor last season.

There have been reports that Knicks team president Phil Jackson is looking to deal Felton, meaning adding another point guard becomes even a bigger priority for the salary cap strapped Knicks.

The good news is that Mills is a CAA client and there has been interest from the Knicks in the past so the fit is naturally there.

The 25-year-old Mills averaged 10.2 points in 18.9 minutes per game during the regular season with impressive 42.5 percent three-point shooting.

The bad news is that he averaged only 1.8 assists per game so that demonstrates that he’s not a pass-first point guard, something that will be needed in the triangle offense under new head coach Derek Fisher. Despite that though, Mills still posted a nice 18.7 PER off the bench for the Spurs.

The Knicks will be limited to the $3.278 million taxpayer’s mid-level to sign free agents from other teams at more than the minimum salary, which they won’t get a current starting point guard for.

That makes targeting reserves like Mills and Steve Blake, who the Knicks are also linked to a better possibility.

However the Spurs have Mills’ Bird Rights so they will be able to easily outbid the Knicks if they deem that Mills deserves a big raise over the $1.13 million he made last season, which is something they will likely do.

It will be interesting to see how interested Jackson really is in Mills though as he has no ties to him as we have seen his preference for players and coaches with whom he’s familiar with.

At the end of the day though a guy like Mills would represent a big upgrade at the position than what the Knicks currently have so I would expect them to be seriously involved in trying to get Mills to New York.
