New York Knicks Rumors: Dirk Nowitzki makes pitch to Melo

With New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony set to officially opt out of his contract next week and become an unrestricted free agent, stars around the NBA are lining up to make their sales pitch to Anthony in hopes of Melo joining them.

The first in line is Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki recently expressed his desire to play with Anthony and he hopes Melo is listening.

Nowitzki told The Dallas Morning News:

“Listen I think I’ve showed over my 16 years that I can play with anybody. The only tough season I think we’ve had is when we had (Antawn) Jamison and Antoine Walker and myself who are all three kind of the same four-men, but other than that  I think I’ve shown over my career that I can play with anybody. I’ll adjust, whether I have to get out of the way or go to the corner more, post up, pass — I’ll do whatever, really, that needs to be done out there to win or for this franchise to be a winner. If Carmelo would really love to come here, we’d love to have him, and if not, then we’re looking at some other options to make this franchise better and be a winner and be in the playoffs every year again. So whoever comes, whoever does decide to play with us, we’re more excited to have them.”

After chasing and missing out on big stars the past couple of off-season’s like Deron Williams and Dwight Howard, the Mavs look like they will take another shot at landing a superstar with Anthony as they are one of the teams that will reportedly chase Melo.

The Mavericks have some nice pieces in place with Nowitzki, Monta Ellis and other, but adding Anthony could get them back to being one of the top teams in the Western Conference.

The Mavs have also been linked to wanting to re-acquire Knicks center Tyson Chandler, but it would be nearly impossible for them to fit both players under the salary cap.

For now though it looks like Anthony is the Mavs No. 1 priority, at least in the mind of Nowitzki.

Dirk has spoken. We will see if Melo is listening.
