New York Knicks Rumors: Phil Jackson wants to hire a coach soon

Another week has passed and the New York Knicks are still without a head coach.

That could all change in the next couple of weeks.

Knicks president Phil Jackson is flying to Turkey in mid-June for his son’s wedding and “desperately wants” to have the team’s head coaching search wrapped up before his trip, a source tells Marc Berman of the New York Post.

One of Jackson’s former players Derek Fisher is the leading candidate right now, but Jackson’s fiancée, Lakers president Jeanie Buss, who will also be making the trip to Turkey also has interest in Fisher for the Lakers’ front office, if not as head coach.

If Fisher ends up going to the Lakers, Berman also notes that Jackson could then turn to two former assistants who are triangle wizards in Kurt Rambis and Jim Cleamons. Jackson has also interviewed veteran coach Mike Dunleavy, who still could be an option if he doesn’t land Fisher.

It is worth noting that Mark Jackson, another reported candidate, may be reluctant to coach the Knicks with too heavy an influence from the president’s office, making it a bad match according to Berman.

The Zen Master has been on record of saying he wanted to interview Jackson, but to date that has not happened.

With the way this search has gone on so far, it is anyone’s guess how it will turn out, but we could have our answer within the next 10 days.
