New York Knicks Rumors: Patrick Ewing still waiting on call from Knicks

Anytime we talk coaching vacancies, especially with the New York Knicks, one man sits by the phone awaiting a call.

But the phone never rings.

That man in former New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing, who once again is interested in a head coaching opportunity with the Knicks, but doesn’t appear to be on Phil Jackson‘s short list of candidates.

He expressed that interest to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com.

“My family’s still there I still have a home there,” Ewing said Saturday on CBS Sports Radio’s Eye on Basketball show. “I don’t know what is going to happen in terms of who they’re going to have to fill that void. But if I get a call, I’ll be ready.”

Since his playing career ended, Ewing has had plenty of experience as an assistant coach and has expressed his interest to be a head coach with any organization, but the Hall of Fame center never seems to draw serious interest around the league.

He has very little chance at drawing serious interest from the Knicks this time around either.

Jackson has made it clear that he wants to target a former player as the Knicks next coach and would like someone experienced in the triangle offense.

Unfortunately Ewing is neither.

However that doesn’t stop some from thinking he would be the perfect choice.

The Boston Globe‘s Gary Washburn recently wrote that the Knicks should consider Ewing.

Washburn wrote:

Ewing would seem to be an intriguing candidate to coach the Knicks. His retired number hangs from the rafters at Madison Square Garden and he was one of the top players of his generation. He has worked wonders this season with Charlotte big man Al Jefferson, who is an All-NBA first-team candidate.

However despite his resume as an assistant and his desire to become an NBA coach, Ewing will once again have to sit by the phone and wait.

Hopefully one of these days it rings.
