New York Knicks Rumors: Steve Kerr reportedly accepts Golden State Warriors job

New York Knicks team president Phil Jackson put all of his eggs in one basket and rolled the dice on current TNT analyst Steve Kerr in becoming the Knicks next head coach.

Jackson rolled the dice and crapped out.

According to David Aldridge of, Kerr shunned the Knicks and has reportedly accepted the Golden State Warriors head coaching position instead.

Contract details haven’t been released at this time, nor has official confirmation from Kerr or the team been announced, but either way it is bad news for the Knicks.

But Ian Begley of is reporting that the deal is for five years and $25 million. Kerr’s agent, Mike Tannenbaum has confirmed the deal.

Kerr had been at the top of the Knicks wish list ever since Jackson fired Mike Woodson after the season and all reports suggested he was close to accepting the Knicks offer based on his relationship with Jackson and the fact that Kerr would come in and install the triangle offense.

But that offer never came as it took the Knicks an awful long time to make Kerr a formal offer as it was reported that Knicks owner James Dolan balked at meeting Kerr’s salary demands, which the Warriors had no problems doing.

Give Golden State credit. As soon as Stan Van Gundy, the other candidate on the Warriors list, accepted the coaching gig with the Detroit Pistons, they moved quickly on Kerr.

Ultimately the Knicks paid a price for dragging things out with Kerr as to date he has been their only candidate.

At the end of the day though, you can’t fault Kerr for taking the Warriors gig.

Golden State has a roster loaded with young talent and is in a position to compete right away. The Knicks are not and there is no guarantee that free agent to be Carmelo Anthony is coming back to New York and Dolan’s constant interference and the Golden State job is much more attractive than that of the Knicks.

Throw in the fact that with Golden State Kerr will be closer to his family and he seems to have hit the jackpot.

As for the Knicks, they are back to square one in their coaching search that seems like it will drag on for a lot while longer.
