New York Knicks Rumors: Steve Kerr reportedly keeping Warriors as an option

While the New York Knicks are anxiously awaiting a decision from Steve Kerr, something our Michael Burke looked at earlier today, it’s possible that Kerr is anxiously awaiting a decision from another franchise, the Golden State Warriors in particular.

It has been long speculated that Kerr was interested in the Warriors job as well, if it became available.

Now that the Warriors have been eliminated from the postseason at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers, it is quite possible that Kerr may hold out a few more days to see if a quick decision is made concerning the fate of current Warriors’ head coach Mark Jackson.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reported over the weekend:

“One thing that can derail Kerr’s getting hired by the Knicks is if the Warriors lose their first-round series to the Clippers on Saturday and coach Mark Jackson is let go. Kerr, whose family lives in San Diego, may listen if approached by the Warriors.”

Despite his relationship with Phil Jackson, a chance to coach Golden State makes sense for Kerr, not only because of the close proximity to his home.

The opportunity to coach a current playoff team filled with young stars has to be a little more appealing than a lottery team like the Knicks that are void of not only any draft picks this season, but salary cap flexibility as well.

While no decision has been made yet by the Warriors on Jackson, you get the feeling that he is on his way out the door.

Warriors; center Jermaine O’Neal told reporters after the team’s Game 6 win, per USA Today‘s Sam Amick:

“You get the feel that no matter what happens, our coach won’t be our coach next year. You just get that feel.”

Kerr is still the frontrunner for the Knicks job, but he has options, something I reported former Indiana Pacers star Reggie Miller tried to convince his broadcast partner of.

A decision from Kerr is expected Thursday or Friday and it is expected that he will become the Knicks next head coach.

However the Warriors could throw a damper in those plans if they choose to act quickly on Jackson.

Needless to say, the next few days will be very interesting.
