NBA Rumors: Knicks' Carmelo Anthony to visit many teams

Once the calendar hits July 1, the Carmelo Anthony tour will officially begin and it is something the New York Knicks seriously need to be worried about.

That’s the date Anthony officially will opt out of his contract and become a free agent, and ‘Melo plans to be a busy guy over the summer, similar to what we saw from Houston Rockets’ center Dwight Howard last summer.

According to Sean Deveney of The Sporting NewsAnthony will meet with several teams.

“He wants to be in a situation where he can start winning, and he is going to look at teams based on that,” the source said. “Coaching is only a part of the equation. What they do now is not going to be as important as can they win?”

Free agency opens on July 1, and, the source said, Anthony would like, “the Dwight Howard treatment.” That means he wants to go through the same sort of process that Howard went through last summer, when Howard set up shop in Los Angeles and set up meetings with five teams—Houston, the Lakers, Dallas, Golden State and Atlanta—each of whom came in and made formal presentations.

While the Knicks certainly have an opportunity to re-sign Anthony, you have to think the Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Rockets will be among the teams that Anthony will be meeting with.

At the end of the day ‘Melo’s decision will be an easy one. Does he want to win or is it more about money?

The Knicks can’t compete with other franchises in terms of giving Anthony a real opportunity to win a championship, something he claims is his main goal. Anthony would have to likely suffer through another season like this past one before the Knicks can attempt to rebuild and that is something that he doesn’t sound too thrilled about doing.

However, if it is about the money, the Knicks will be the frontrunners as they can offer him an extra year and $30 million more than any other franchise.

However, as I noted yesterday, ‘Melo wouldn’t have to sacrifice too much money in the first year of his deal if he chose to go elsewhere as the salary cap is due to go up, meaning that with the right moves, teams like the Bulls and Rockets could offer Anthony close to $20 million next season.

It is worth noting that Howard is the only max free agent in history to leave the extra year on the table when he signed with the Rockets last summer.

Will Anthony do the same?
