New York Knicks: Phil Jackson Press Conference Highlights

The New York Knicks ushered in a new era today. In front of hundreds of reporters, TV and computer screens, the Knicks welcomed in the Phil Jackson era in hopes of turning their wayward franchise around.

And what a delight the press conference was. Not since Carmelo Anthony was introduced to the Knicks in 2011 (and perhaps not even then) have Knicks fans had so much reason to rejoice. From James Dolan’s proclamation that he has ceded control to Jackson to Jackson’s reassurances that the Knicks will install a winning culture and system, much like how they operated in those championship years in the ’70s — it was a glorious morning.

Check out some of the highlights below:

Phil Jackson’s opening remarks (unprepared, like a badass):

Again, his thoughts on developing a winning culture — and moreover, changing the current culture — is so, so encouraging.

An excerpt from the Q&A session. Highlights includes:

  • James Dolan stuttering for eight seconds before declaring himself not a basketball expert and “out of [his] element when it comes to the team”. Cool.
  • Dolan explaining that he initially talked to Phil Jackson to ask him about coaching.
  • Jackson commenting on the idea of moving forward with Carmelo Anthony in some sort of playing system

More Q&A stuff, this time about Carmelo Anthony and his future in New York:

Again, Jackson killed it at this presser. And, to a degree, despite some lame jokes and remarks, James Dolan as well. Already it was the most open, honest, and forward-thinking Knicks press conference I’ve seen in my days as a fan. I truly finished it with a higher level of anticipation for the future of the Knicks than I’ve had in a long time.
