New York Knicks: Mike Woodson Denies Indiana University Coaching Rumors

Today a story ran in the New York Daily News that if Mike Woodson is fired, he could end up coaching at his alma mater, Indiana University. Woodson, who’s somehow continued to skate on thin ice for the better part of four months, probably won’t last past this season. If that’s the case, Indiana U could come calling. Frank Isola has the story:

Mike Woodson is a long shot to survive the anticipated purge at MSG. However, he may have a job lined up sooner than later. According to a source, Woodson would be a top candidate at his alma mater, Indiana University, if current coach Tom Crean does not return. The source claims that several prominent IU boosters are pushing to buy out Crean and install Woodson, a product of Indianapolis, as the coach.

Woodson, according to a team source, has been resigned to the fact that this would be his last season with the Knicks even before last Friday, when the Daily News first reported that Madison Square Chairman James Dolan had offered Phil Jackson a front-office job. Jackson has said on numerous occasions that he is no longer interested in coaching.

Woodson has denied the rumors all day, however, according to Steve Popper:

popper woodson iuWoodson has insisted that he’s the coach of the Knicks right now and plans to be in the future, which… well, sorry, Mike. The Knicks’ front office has exercised a lot of patience in not firing Woodson this year, particularly with a lack of good replacements on the market. However, with next season leading into a pivotal 2015 season, it’s hard to imagine that Woodson will be kept on board.

Still, it’s respectable of Woodson not to comment on somebody else’s job, and if/when he is no longer the Knicks coach, it’d be cool if he went back to Indiana University to coach.
