NBA Trade Rumors: Knicks to shop Amar'e Stoudemire

After failing to make a move at the NBA Trade Deadline, the New York Knicks must turn their attentions to the offseason.

It looks like they are already doing so.

The Knicks reportedly will look to shop forward Amar’e Stoudemire in the offseason. That won’t be the first time that STAT has been shopped, but entering the final year of his deal, the Knicks may have a little more success.

The Knicks are going to try to shop Stoudemire’s expiring contract in the offseason, according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.

The Knicks have limited options to improve this summer but a move they are expected to make is offering the expiring contract of Amar’e Stoudemire to a team that in turn could trade the Knicks the long-term, unwanted contract of an impact player, such as the Pelicans’ Eric Gordon

Stoudemire, who is owed $21,679,893 this season, is entering the final year of his deal next season. He’s scheduled to make $23,410,988 next season.

The signing of Stoudemire just hasn’t worked out for the Knicks.

He played in 78 games during the 2010-11 season and averaged 25.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, but injuries limited him to only 47 games during the 2011-12 season and just 29 games last season. This season he is averaging 9.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game, playing in 44 contests.

While the Knicks will look to move STAT in the offseason, I doubt they will have much success, however some team may be willing to take on Stoudemire’s contract to get it off their books after next season.

To do so, the Knicks will have to take back salary and more bad contracts like Gordon’s.

The Pelicans have long been trying to deal Gordon, who is a solid player when healthy but hasn’t yet lived up to a contract that has more than $30 million remaining over the next two seasons.

That alone would prevent the Knicks from signing max free agents in the summer of 2015.

If the Knicks couldn’t move STAT by now, it makes very little sense to move him in the offseason to take on a bad contact that will handcuff the franchise in 2015.

However the Knicks have never been very smart and I don’t expect them to be now.
