New York Knicks Rumors: Dwight Howard advising Melo on free agency

The upcoming offseason is going to be one of the most difficult decisions that New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony has ever faced in his life.

He has to weigh his options. If ‘Melo is serious about wanting to win an NBA championship, he will be on the first flight out of New York. If it’s all about the money, Anthony will be wearing blue and orange for the rest of his career.

That’s not going to be an easy decision for Anthony and it makes sense that he will seek advice from some of his friends and his peers.

One of those guys reportedly advising Anthony is Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard. Yes, that Howard who made a mockery and a circus of his free agency for two years.

In an interview with USA Today‘s Sam Amick, Howard said he has discussed free agency with ‘Melo on “several occasions” and maintains that Anthony’s primary focus is on winning.

Howard said:

He has been in the league for a long time. He hasn’t made it to the Finals and at this point in his career he wants to win. You can see it every night when he plays. I know he has to take a lot of shots and all that stuff, but he just wants to win.

I can’t say (what he’ll do). That’s on him. He’s got to decide. (But) he can’t be what everybody else wants. In this situation, you’ve got to take your heart out of it…So I’d just say for him, take his heart out of it and think with his head and think about business.

It’s been well documented that the Knicks can offer Anthony an extra $30 million for an extra year after the season. However it has also been well documented that the Knicks are no closer to winning a championship now than the day Anthony arrived and there is no sign that they will be in a better situation any time soon, even given the fact that they should have plenty of cap room in 2015.

It’s also worth noting that with all of the free agents in history that face the situation that ‘Melo is going to face in the offseason, Howard is the only one ever to leave the extra $30 million on the table to get himself to a better situation.

Will Anthony follow a similar path?

Only time will tell but the losing isn’t helping the Knicks case as it is clearly weighing on Anthony as he is likely going to miss the postseason for the first time in his 11-year NBA career.

That decision paid off for Howard.

We will see if Anthony uses that as a teaching tool.
