New York Knicks Rumors: Are Knicks targeting Jimmer Fredette ?

The New York Knicks will be looking to make some roster moves over the course of the next couple of days and could have their eyes set on a popular name.

Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders identifies the Knicks as a “team to watch” in a potential race for current Sacramento Kings guard Jimmer Fredette, citing New York’s desire to add three-point shooting as well as potential legal trouble surrounding Raymond Felton.

Felton was arrested overnight and faces three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Fredette and the Kings are nearing a buyout agreement, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Several teams are expected to have interest in signing the former 10th overall pick for the rest of the season. Fredette had been a frequent subject of trade rumors, but the Kings couldn’t find a taker for his expiring contract.

While it may be a popular move among Knicks fans, I don’t know if it is a great basketball move to consider, even though Fredette dropped a career-high 24 points just last week in a Kings win over the Knicks. That likely has to do more with the Knicks porous defense than anything else.

In the Kings three games since dropping a career high, Fredette has played only a total of four minutes, having not logged a single minute in the past two Sacramento wins.

Fredette was a superstar at BYU, but has yet to approach that kind of success in the NBA, averaging 7.0 points in 15.0 minutes per game over two and a half seasons. His minutes and scoring have declined in both seasons since his rookie year, and his numbers are just 5.9 PPG and 11.3 MPG this season.

He has improved his three-point accuracy every year, which could intrigue the Knicks as he is shooting an impressive 49.3 percent behind the arc this season, but he’s taken just 73 attempts.

With the Knicks going nowhere and Fredette’s contract expiring at the end of the season, I guess looking at Fredette couldn’t hurt, but he does little to improve the current sad state of the team.

Personally, I would rather see a guy like Toure’ Murry start to get more minutes than give them to guy like Fredette.
