New York Knicks Rumors: J.R. Smith likely to remain starter rest of season

It’s been an interesting season for New York Knicks sixth man J.R. Smith.

He’s gone from Sixth Man of the Year to having knee surgery after signing a big contract. He then got suspended for marijuana use. After that there was a failed experiment as a starter, a tantrum throw about his brother Chris, a couple of benchings and a series of poor play and distractions that have lasted an entire season.

Add all of that up and what do you get?

A full-time starter.

Only in New York.

Knicks head coach Mike Woodson indicated that Smith will more than likely remain a starter, even after Iman Shumpert returns from his knee injury in a couple of weeks.

Yesterday I looked at the fact that Shump was unhappy with his role on the team. If this is true, he’s going to be thrilled when he returns and has to take a backseat to Smith.

There’s also the fact that rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. has outplayed both Shump and Smith and if anyone would be inserted into the starting lineup, you would think it would be the rookie, especially since Woodson is coaching to save his job.

But that is not the case.

Smith has been a little bit better as of late but is still averaging only 11.7 points per game while shooting a miserable 38.8 percent from the floor.

While he has been a little bit better as of late, averaging 15.6 points in his last 10 games while shooting 44.3 percent from the floor, Smith is still not a consistent enough option, evident by his 4-of-14 performance from the floor in Friday night’s loss to the Orlando Magic.

If this were the 2012-13 season, this may not be an issue as Smith was playing the best basketball of his career.

But it’s not.

It just goes to show how little of a feel that Woodson really has for his team.
