NBA Rumors: Will hiring Phil Jackson keep Carmelo Anthony in New York?

There have been plenty of big stories surrounding the New York Knicks this season. Unfortunately none of them have to do with winning games.

Instead it is all about the speculation of when Mike Woodson will be fired and where Carmelo Anthony will play next season.

It has been speculated that Woodson will be let go prior to the All-Star Game, whether that happens or not remains to be seen. However there is next to no chance that Woodson returns next season.

For Anthony to return to New York, hiring a coach that he not only wants, but respects is going to be priority No. 1.

That brings me to Phil Jackson, who every time there is an opening on the Knicks bench is the first name mentioned.

According to the New York Daily News’ Frank Isola (via Bleacher Report), the Knicks will chase Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy, Stan Van Gundy and a few others to replace Woodson if and when he is let go.

It will take a big payday to lure both Jackson and Van Gundy back to the bench and one thing that is a positive is the fact that James Dolan isn’t afraid to spend money.

Isola believes Jackson, John Calipari and JVG will be the top three guys the Knicks will chase and you have to believe that Anthony will, and should, have some say in the process.

Personally I have a hard time envisioning any of the three guys having much interest in the job, especially with the mess the Knicks roster is currently in. But having a large amount of cap space in 2015 could be a great selling point.

Jackson is the guy the Knicks have always wanted and I expect them to put on the full court press to lure him back to the Big Apple.

He’s the type of guy that could certainly keep Anthony in town, given his championship pedigree.

It’s going to take a great coach like Jackson to convince Anthony to stay so I expect Jackson to be a big key for Anthony.

But the reality of the situation is Woodson is still the Knicks coach and no major move will be made even if he is let go this season. I wouldn’t expect a major hire until the offseason as it is highly unlikely that any coach will be able to offer a quick fix for this current circus.

However it will be interesting to see if Jackson has any interest in the Knicks.

He could be the guy to not only keep Melo in town but hopefully produce the results that Knicks fans have craved for the past four decades.
