This time of year, there will be plenty of New York Knicks rumors with the trade deadline approaching.
Most of those rumors naturally will involve Carmelo Anthony‘s future with the team.
Despite his wife’s La La’s claim that Melo will likely re-sign with the Knicks, I’m not so confident that her word carries a lot of weight right now.
However one story slipped under the radar this week that could have direct ties to Melo’s future and that was the fact that his personal trainer Idan Ravin has left the team due to philosophical differences with the coaching staff, league sources told ESPNNewYork.com.
ESPN’s Ian Begley noted:
The Knicks hired Ravin earlier this season to work closely with players on shooting, fitness and general development. Prior to the Knicks, Ravin worked as a personal trainer to some of the top players in the NBA, including Anthony and Chris Paul. He also has worked extensively with Knicks guard J.R. Smith.
It is unclear if the Knicks will fill the vacancy, as his hiring was perceived as a perk for Anthony, who will test free agency this summer, and Smith, who re-signed with the Knicks over the summer.
It is unclear if Ravin’s departure will have an impact on Anthony’s pending free-agency decision.
Despite the Knicks three-game winning streak, something like this can’t make Anthony happy, even though he hasn’t publically complained about the situation.
At the end of the day though it would make more sense for the Knicks to cater to Melo and not do anything that could potentially push him out the door. That’s especially true with all of the speculation that Anthony will leave New York anyway.
The situation with Ravin may seem like something minor right now, but it could carry a lot of weight at the end of the season.
