New York Knicks: Bedeviled by Injuries

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, except if you’re the New York Knicks. Soon the Knicks medical staff will be sitting on the bench of this MASH unit.  Now, yes, injuries are a part of the game, but injuries are also associated with age and being out of shape.
Not many Knicks outside of Carmelo Anthony came to camp in season shape. I don’t think we had one exhibition game when all the Knicks played. It was only with the help of the CIA that we found out Amar’e Stoudemire and Iman Shumpert had knee surgery along with J.R. Smith.
Since camp, Raymond (not in great shape) Felton has had numerous leg, hip, and groin injuries. Beno Udrih has knee issues along with Metta World Peace. Kenyon Martin and Stoudemire last night both hurt their ankles and are now out.
According to Chris Herring, “Woodson says Martin will probably be out a few games. Expects that Stoudemire will probably miss time, too, with his ankle injury.”

Now compound that with Tim Hardaway Jr., who injured the same left wrist he did during Vegas. Fortunately, x-rays were negative. Pablo Prigioni is still recuperating from a broken toe and Smith is suffering from a bruised ego. Almost the entire Knick backcourt is injured with the exception of Shumpert, who shows no signs of off season surgery.

Lets not forget Jeremy Tyler is just returning from a broken leg.  So Prigioni, Tyler and Chandler have had bone breaks.

Martin, Stoudemire and Anthony ankle injuries. Udrih, Smith, Stoudemire, Peace and Shumpert knee injuries. Felton’s leg. Hardaway’s wrist. Smith’s knee and ego.

As Tyson Chandler, who has only played approximately 15 games this year with a broken leg and most recently the effects of bronchitis, tries to return to form, the Knicks front court is now without his backups in Stoudemire and Martin. The Knicks have to pray that nothing happens to Anthony, either.

So to date, Felton, Anthony, Prigioni, Martin, Stoudemire, Udrih, Peace, Hardaway and Smith have missed time due to injuries and we are just around the midway point of the season.

Well we need to evaluate our offseason training program and get younger and stronger.  Last night, Indiana proved to be the healthier and stronger team.  You can win with injuries, just take a look at Oklahoma City, who continue to win without Russell Westbrook.  This team leads the league in one category, and that seems to be injuries.  Too many and too often to just be bad luck.

Tonight against the Clippers, Woodson should allow Cole Aldrich to backup Chandler.  He had 3 rebounds in 5 minutes last night.  Let Tyler play some real minutes.  Woodson needs to not only play his veterans but develop his youngsters.  With the infirmary and hot tub filled to the brink, Now is the time to add their hustle, fire and energy.
