New York Knicks Rumors: Is Tom Thibodeau the key to Carmelo Anthony staying in New York?

Ever since the New York Knicks came out of the gates so poorly this season, there have been constant rumors about head coach Mike Woodson‘s potential dismissal.

Knicks’ owner James Dolan put that notion to rest by saying Woodson wouldn’t be fired, but common belief is that there really isn’t a coach that would make a bigger impact currently available.

But that won’t be the case after this season, as I have a hard time believing that Woodson will be back. Nothing short of a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals will likely save his job, and that’s not likely to happen.

That brings me to current Chicago Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibodeau, who recently has been linked to the Knicks’ coaching job.

In his a piece for the New York Daily News, Mitch Lawrence says there are rumors around the Bulls’ camp that Thibodeau might already have a deal in place to become the head coach of the Knicks next season.

There are plenty of plusses to that potential situation, the biggest one involves current Knicks’ superstar Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony recently spoke of his fondness for Thibodeau and it has been speculated that Chicago could be a potential landing spot for Melo when he tests free agency after this season.

If Thibodeau is a coach that can keep Anthony happy and make him want to stay in New York, it makes perfect sense for the Knicks to target him.

Naturally Thibodeau and the Bulls denied the rumors, but there are plenty of other reasons why the Knicks could interest him.

The first of which is that he is familiar with the organization, having served as an assistant coach in New York from 1996-2001.

The next of which is actually a big deal and that is the fact that Thibodeau is represented by CAA, Dolan’s favorite agency.

For this situation to happen, a lot of things need to fall into place.

The first of which is Woodson, who is under contract through next season would have to be let go.

The next of which is Thibodeau is under contract through the 2016-17 season.

That makes an in season transition impossible, but as we saw with Doc Rivers in the offseason, anything can happen.

Ultimately when things eventually play out, there is a good chance that Thibodeau will be coaching Anthony next season.

The Knicks would be wise to make sure that happens in New York instead of Chicago.
