New York Knicks Rumors: Former coach George Karl rips J.R. Smith

Not too many people know New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith the way former Denver Nuggets coach George Karl does.

Having been around Smith for so many years in Denver, Karl knows about as good as anyone the way the dysfunctional Smith operates.

With that being said, Karl had a few choice words aimed at his former player after another week filled with Smith acting like an idiot both on and off the floor.

Karl told Michael Kay on 98.7 ESPN radio in New York that his former player is going to wake up one day and realize how much he’s wasted great opportunities because of this “mockery he brings to the game.”

It’s hard to disagree with Karl here as even a blind person can see that Smith is wasting an opportunity and could one day find himself out of the league. That’s apparent from the fact that not only has he been awful on the floor, but his antics truly do make a mockery of the game.

Making only $6 million a year, there’s a reason no other team will touch the reigning Sixth Man of the Year.

However Karl does leave some hope for Smith by telling Kay that Smith still has a “skill that championship teams need” and suggested that a team like the Heat or Spurs may be able to corral the erratic shooting guard: “There’s that possibility…I think right now that’s the position if I was J.R.’s agent [I would take]. I would be looking at a culture where there would be more peer pressure…I know San Antonio has always liked (J.R.) and I know they’ve thought about bringing him in.”

The Spurs angle is interesting but I would have to agree with Ian Begley of ESPN New York when he says that San Antonio doesn’t make a lot of mistakes in terms of bringing the wrong type off players in and right now there is nothing about Smith that would suggest he is the right type of guy for any team.
